Doris came to the United States in 1950 where she continued her studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology and then worked as a fashion designer for several haute couture houses in New York for ten years.
Her paintings’ subtle themes and variations are further enriched by her extensive world travel. Living in Paris from 1970–1975, greatly influenced her work, and in the 1980’s, Doris studied for two years at the Westminster Institute in London. Upon returning to the United States, she studied at the Art’s Student League in New York City for four years.
Doris greatly admires the technique and workmanship of the 17th century Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt, Franz Hals, Abraham van Beyren and others. The French impressionists such as Monet, Renoir, Degas and others and, in particular, their use of color and light, have also been a source of inspiration.
Using oils, watercolors and pastels, Doris has ingeniously married the influences of the masters and has developed her own distinct style in landscape, still life and figurative paintings. Doris especially loves to paint still lifes because they capture a fleeting, rich and beautiful moment on canvas, one that will remain long after the luscious fruit or fragrant flowers spoil and wilt.
Doris Borst has exhibited to wide acclaim, both locally and abroad. Her work has been displayed at the Elizabeth Anne Seton Memorial Gallery in New Brunswick, N.J and in several international art exhibits, including the Asian Water Color Association Exhibition that was held in Tianjin, China, in August 1990, and at the Osaka Museum in Japan. She participates in the Salmagundi Club exhibitions in New York City and at the Golden Door Gallery in New Hope, Pennsylvania.
Doris is the recipient of numerous awards for her refined work, at various juried exhibitions. These awards include the Best in Show award and the Grumbacher’s Award at Raritan Valley Art Association exhibitions.
Doris is a member of various art associations including the Raritan Valley Art Association, the Edison Arts Society, the American Artists Professional League, Inc. and the Salmagundi Club. Her works are in private collections in the United States and abroad.
Mrs. Borst currently lives in Somerset and has been a resident of New Jersey since 1958.
