June 2002
Artist of the Month:
My name is Danielle Chao. I am 16 years old and a junior at John P. Stevens
High School. I have been interested in Art since I was little and my family,
friends and teachers have supported me all the way. I took my first drawing
class when I was 7 years old. Since then, I have been studying at Creative
Images Art Studio under the instruction of Ms. Patricia Woods, who has
been an exceptional mentor and inspiration to me. In addition, I've had
some experience in Chinese Painting and calligraphy. For the past two years
in school, I have taken Visual Arts 1 & 2 taught by Ms. Alison Farkas,
who has encouraged my artistic endeavors. I am also an active member of
National Art Honor Society and Art Club. I have participated in several
exhibits, competitions, and contests sponsored by the Edison Arts Society
such as last year's "Windows of Edison" contest, the Edison Township Public
& Private High School Competition, and the exhibits of the EAS Art
Gallery at the Sheraton Hotel at Raritan Center. This year on May 18th
at the Edison Municipal Complex, I was awarded first prize for my painting
"Mother and Child" in the 2002 High School Art Competition. Currently,
one of my works created out of cut paper, "Self Portrait", is on display
in the Gallery's "In America" State-wide juried art exhibit until mid-November.
I feel that my artwork is a creative reflection
of who I am; It is often solely through use of the palette and canvas that
I am able to express myself clearly. Besides Art, I enjoy music, hanging
out with my friends, going to the beach and the city, football, and reading.
